London Celebrations of the Wedding between the Princess Royal and the Prince of Orange in 1733-1734

The wedding of Anne, the Princess Royal and Willem IV, Prince of Orange presented opportunities for an enormous display of Protestant dynastic loyalty in England. Preparations went on for over six months, and affected just about every aspect of cultural life. Dance played a significant role in all the London celebrations, and instances abound of theatrical masques and entr’acte dances to honour the royal couple. This article examines how such choreographic display both reflected and stimulated patriotic feeling.
