Performing cliché Sarah Bernhardt and stereotypes of celebrity

This article examines Sarah Bernhardt as France’s first modern celebrity. Reading Bernhardt’s 1907 autobiography Ma double vie in the context of a burgeoning celebrity culture in nineteenth-century France, it focuses in particular on the notion of cliché in order to examine the ways in which the discourse of celebrity sought to categorise Bernhardt.
