Debenedetti identified the art of rendering original styles of speech in La strada di Swann (1946) by Natalia Ginzburg, where a familiar tone shapes the speech of both narrator and characters. Ginzburg as a translator innovates with this register in its functional fidelity to the source text. Her choice of ethical translation is compared to the neutralising translation of Serini (1963) and to the aestheticizing versions by Debenedetti (Un amore di Swann, 1948) and Raboni (Dalla parte di Swann, 1983).
