Intertextuality flourishes in La Recherche. As does intersemioticity, which embraces the artworks evoked in the descriptions and discourse on art. This aesthetic polyphony creates, more than any other, a strategic dilemma between, on the one hand, the importation of the source cultural universe, which risks alienation, and on the other hand, a localisation based on possible symbolic equivalences.
