Abstract: During the First World War, the Italian poet-soldier Giuseppe Ungaretti wrote a number of poems (his “war journal”), characterized by the horrors of conflict and the aridity of landscape. Still, Ungaretti, who has an abiding love of life - thanks to the lesson in the Canticle of the Creatures by Saint Francis of Assisi, discovers the wonders of Nature, of brotherhood and of harmony with the universe.
