Abstract: The oldest known text written in an Atlantic Creole–the Passion de Notre Seigneur selon saint Jean en langage nègre–provides us with an opportunity to confront its grammatical materials with cognates in other historical and contemporary (Atlantographic) sources. The resemblances unearthed have led us to sketch out a schema of diffusion from the north of Haiti, and to mobilise the notion of the “generation of dialects” with regard to the history of Caribbean migratory movements.
