- Abstract: The novel Mon nom est Rouge addresses the sacred and the profane in Ottoman painting toward the end of the sixteenth century. Miniaturists are commissioned to create a book that will contain a portrait of the Sultan done in the Italian style; however, Italian painting is considered profane. This article scrutinizes how the discourse of the sacred is constructed in the original text and in the French translation.
