- Abstract: Does what Western, monotheistic, and traditionally Hellenic civilization calls a “soul” correspond to what the Chinese call hun and po? That does not seem to be the case. The former has a spiritualist conception of this anima-psuchè, while the latter take hun-po to be a living form of matter. In the West, man possesses a single soul while the Chinese think they have the capacity to have multiple hun-po–up to ten according to Taoism.
