Rarely foregrounded in chansons de geste, the doctor is summoned to tend to or cure the wounds of the hero. Is it possible to discern the motif of the warrior’s cure in this type of scene? The bad doctor is a very unusual figure. Frequently represented as a magician with extensive powers, he embodies the unknown, the strange, and the foreign: realistic representations of the doctor are exceptional. In the epic imaginary, he appears as a fantastical figure.
