Notes sur le rire chez Vigny

In Vigny's work, the appearance of laughter is often ambivalent. An expression of carefree youth and simple pleasures, it also brings pretense and lies. In its darkest recesses, it can even be essentially diabolical when it expresses pleasure in evil, or enjoyment in destruction. In this sense, laughter for Vigny often accompanies an accusatory irony.
