AB  - The purpose of this contribution is to understand, based on the positions held by Lukács in The Theory of the Novel, but also in reference to Castoriadis, Bakhtin, and Pavel, to what degree the novel constitutes the expression of an emblematic requirement of modernity, compared to the epic and the tragedy, both of which come from a world of meanings that has now passed by.
