AB  - Focusing on four novella-length fairy tales written between 1744 and 1777, the article studies the treatment of the episode of the night at the opera. It highlights the dramatic interest in satirizing a frivolous society which prizes ritual over spectacle, but also shows how the authors participate in the aesthetic debates of their time, cementing the relationship between the genres of the fairy tale and the opera.
