Providing an overview of theater during the Trente Glorieuses period, Gautier’s columns ought to be viewed in relation to the academic narratives of this novelist in search of legitimacy. Repulsed by Parisianism and experimental theater, Gautier made his loyalty to the general public clear, at the risk of succumbing to Poujadism and simplistic biases.
