Although he appears to be a secondary character, this friend of the hero turns out, over the course of this analysis, to be in some way the protagonist’s double, his strategic ideas representing a parallel with the novel’s conception. As Saint-Loup’s body returns to Combray, this place devastated by war links up again at the end of the novel with the Combray of the beginning, by way of a vast loop traversing time.
