AB  - Gilberte’s indecent gesture in Du côté de chez Swann can make the reader err as much as the hero, who confuses the signs of social invitation with those of sexual insult, and vice versa. Three illustrations – two films and a cartoon – reproduce this gesture with a semiotic ineptness comparable to that of the hero, leading to more general questions about vision and interpretation.
