On the one hand, Bossuet embodied “the highest form of speech with which nature had endowed the lips of man,” the perfect incarnation of purity of heart in sublime eloquence; but on the other, this prophetic voice that had become superhuman put its lyricism at the service of dogmatism and absolutism, thereby giving rise to as much indignation as admiration.
