AB  - From 1589 to 1594, in the ­context of civil war, Henri IV governed the provinces from a distance, not being able to get there. He did so by writing to the notables he trusted. In Champagne, the ­sovereign’s correspondence shows us that he knew how to ­construct a relationship of authority and trust with the elites: speech “from on-high”, which allowed him to organise the defence of the territory, ­consolidate the fidelity of the city of Châlons, and prepare people for peace negotiations.
