AB  - Certain recurrent motifs in the novels of the Grail are re-appropriated by the Christian supernatural. Interpreting the motif of the speared knight in relation to representations of Christian hell, this article shows that these paranetic images can be perverted in the course of their infiltration into the genre of romance, at least in the Lancelot en prose, as their use in the Queste del saint Graal connects them explicitly with the pain of the damned.
