AB  - This article surveys the sentimental literature produced during the Enlightenment in order to distinguish the conventions constitutive of the genre and its required mode of reading. It shows how, following the Revolution, the sentimental novel was engaged in a process of renewal which would ultimately influence the development of the nineteenth-century novel more generally.
