AB  - Senancour’s last novel, Isabelle (1833), shares many characteristics with the Romantic sentimental novel of which it is in some ways a rewriting. At the same time, it moves the genre in the direction of the “sentimental” understood in the sense of a reflective representation –at once symbolic and interrogative, derived from Schiller more than Rousseau– of political and aesthetic (literary and pictorial) mediations which are positioned between the subject and a nature whose paradigm has been lost.
