Forced to leave Paola Scala at the beginning of the play, Bob’le is a figure of exile. The hero’s two addresses to the Virgin show that Bob’le’s exile is not, however, linked to the village itself, which is only a mythical image. Bob’le is a pure figure of exile, suffering from an incurable malady called life.
