AB  - The Muwayliḥī describe the blind imitation of the West by the East searching for a self in the nineteenth century. In an act of borrowing which seeks to safeguard Arabic identity, these two sides of the world are compared in ironic narrative dialogues centred around the question of the Arabic self vis-à-vis its Western Other, in which the Western ideal is deconstructed in favour of a modern, new, and independent Arabic-Eastern ideal.
