AB  - This article seeks to grasp the position of the gentleman writer François-René de Chateaubriand at the turn of the old and new “regime of historicity”: a cardinal position, in the sense of being deliberately sceptical. The career of the writer is at once a default choice and a forced choice –in one word: an impasse. Instead of seeking to resolve this contradiction, Chateaubriand embraces it, and bases his position on it by representing it through writing.
