AB  - This article looks at the premodern history of the tradition of three impostors as a motif of antiheretical propaganda running through different periods and religions that should be studied from the perspective of how it was understood. The article demonstrates the autonomy of the traditions of the three rings and the three impostors, and the absence of any mention of an eponymous treatise before Guillaume Postel. It also analyzes the medieval contribution to modern discourse.
