AB  - Serving as a stretcher-bearer and chaplain, the Jesuit priest also found time to ­compose essays and address letters to his cousin which testify to his human and spiritual experiences. He looked at the nature which surrounded him with the eyes of a scholar, theologian, and poet, and meditated on the divine œuvre, sketching out a system in which dogma was ­compatible with the theory of evolution. He called for a spiritual victory with his vows and, despite the horrors of war, put himself entirely in the hands of Providence.
