They express hopes of revival linked to providential individuals and define a particular sort of masculinity. Beethoven, in particular, embodies an ideal figure : democratic, European, and masculine. His character is subject to very strong fictional constructions, in which the anxieties and aspirations of the biographers themselves are often mixed.
