AB  - Mallarmé reconfigured the genre of the newspaper chronicle, transforming it in line with his view on ­contemporary practices including theatre, the salon, dance and fashion. This article examines La Dernière Mode to show how, when writer meets critic, generic operations and performativity testify to an inevitably historicised game of fiction.
