AB  - The young Sartre’s Empédocle draws from a multiplicity of sources: Hölderlin, Nietzsche, and Romain Rolland all wrote about Empedocles—and this theme, in these three cases, is linked to a period of trouble or war. Sartre lived in anticipation of a catastrophe in what we would go on to call the interwar period. This is surely what led him to become a part of this Empedoclean tradition. This strange text, closely related to Une défaite, the novel Sartre wrote in his youth, is crucial because of its connections to Nietzsche.
