Sartre lived in anticipation of a catastrophe in what we would go on to call the interwar period. This is surely what led him to become a part of this Empedoclean tradition. This strange text, closely related to Une défaite, the novel Sartre wrote in his youth, is crucial because of its connections to Nietzsche.
