Bencheikh, Rose noire sans parfum (2000). The work recounts the history of an Arabic woman who, in the ninth century, led a slave uprising and endangered the empire of Baghdad. The “prelude” gives a voice to the slaves, the Zandjs, in order to then take it away from them, because to do otherwise would mean inventing voices which were unable to make themselves heard. While the subject of slavery might seem secondary, the presence of the slaves is crucial.
