AB  - Lévinas and Derrida describe their encounter with a specific animal and from this there emerges a critique of the metaphorical representation of the animal and a shift towards the literature of philosophical discourse. This contribution examines these accounts against the background of the theoretical domains of the two authors. The article then questions the possibility of a literary reading of the two texts, showing, finally, how the hybridization of our conceptions of the human goes hand in hand with the hybridization of language and discourse.
