AB  - The novel Mon nom est Rouge addresses the sacred and the profane in Ottoman painting toward the end of the sixteenth century. Miniaturists are ­commissioned to create a book that will ­contain a portrait of the Sultan done in the Italian style; however, Italian painting is ­considered profane. This article scrutinizes how the discourse of the sacred is ­constructed in the original text and in the French translation.
