AB  - The original French reception of Teresa of ­Ávila’s writings was influenced by translations by Jean de Brétigny (1601), Élisée de Saint-Bernard (1630) and Cyprien de la Nativité (1667) before the classic version by Arnauld ­d’Andilly (1670). The history of these translations is to be read in light of ­conceptions of the art of translation as well as the political orientation underpinning these translations.
