AB  - The translation of Jewish sacred texts varies between deep respect and a somewhat sensual familiarity. The Torah, which is addressed to everyone, is accompanied by ­commentaries and translations. This article retraces the history of synagogue translation and rabbinical sources, and distinguishes oral interpretation, where the original and translation are both present–from written translation, which was made indispensable by the vicissitudes of History.
