AB  - From the beginning, the text of the first chapter of Genesis raises the question of how to interpret it. This depends on the recognition of the status accorded to the text by a given religious group and depends on the hermeneutical background that one adopts. Two ­conceptions of interpretation have been in ­constant ­conflict for several centuries: a “universal” hermeneutics, which aspires to be more than and different from a method, and a general (or critical) hermeneutics, which accepts being a method.
