He developed what Richard Popkin has called a “moderate scepticism”. In his philosophical works, often dialogical and antithetic, Casanova’s “passion for freedom” and his aversion to the systems lead to an aesthetics of disorder and free expression. Unable to gather all the knowledge available, Casanova chooses fragmentary and contradictory forms, which bear the stylistic marks of his hesitations.
