AB  - Drawing on the perspective opened up by Don José’s reply, “Carmen, let me save you and myself with you!”, we ask whether it is possible, within the framework of a so-called interventionist critical reading, to construct a variant of Mérimée’s novella in which Carmen does not die. It is time to propose a reading that challenges the fatal outcome of the plot Mérimée invented.
