AB  - Trevisa’s translation of the Polychronicon is prefaced by a dialogue between a clerk and his patron. It reflects the ­controversy about the politics of translating scientific and religious texts. At the time, there were major sociocultural mutations that ­complicated the presence of two vernaculars. The ­lord’s defense of translation is based on the prestige enjoyed by English before the Normans and on the history of translatio studii ; his arguments are often close to Wycliffites.
