AB  - Deschamps’ ballade 285 is a surprisingly generous recognition and glorification of Chaucer as a pioneering translator or transplanter of learning from Latin and French into English and an “illuminator” or enlightener of his native England. Such high praise pleased, rather than irked, ­Chaucer’s immediate followers, who echoed and were inspired by it to found the critical tradition of Chaucer as the first embellisher of the English language.
