AB  - The English lyrics of Charles ­d’Orléans draw on the language of religious solitude in order to suggest an avenue for poetic innovation, yet it ultimately rejects ­contemplative poetics as an aesthetic possibility. To incorporate Charles ­d’Orléans into the study of vernacular theology suggests new ­contexts for the ­duke’s poetry and reveals the way theological speculation can engender formal and aesthetic practice.
