Recent study of works such as the Liber Pontificalis must be reexamined in the light of local facts, and the hagiographic accounts, subjected to critical analysis, likewise allow the issue to be revisited. The Empire defended the southern end of the Italian Peninsula against the Lombards until the Beneventan duchy transferred its territorial ambition towards the north in the 730s. Byzantium was primarily interested in the mineral resources of the province, but other kinds of industry also played an important role in the Calabrian economy, such as the production of amphorae for the wine export trade. These manufacturing industries depended on the exploitation of rich woodlands. In order to control this wealth, Constantinople was in conflict with Papacy, this conflict only ending when Leon III transferred the jurisdiction of the bishoprics to the patriarcate of Constantinople. Even if the decline in population and economic recession reached their peak at the beginning of the eighth century, the period that followed was characterized by a level of political stability that was conducive to rational exploitation of Calabria’s wealth.
