Despite appearances (particularly in the world of glosses), one bird-name can designate only one bird, whilst a given bird may have several names. The case is probably typical of semantic fields where Linnaean classification has now been introduced, but for which the typology in the Middle Ages was different. In addition, the article draws attention to a certain amount of confusion in Anglo-Norman lexicography (and corrects a number of entries in the Anglo-Norman Dictionary) and attempts to trace the origins of this confusion, probably to be found in the transmission of Biblical texts (the lists of unclean birds in the Old Testament).
