  • Abstract: Ancient music offers invaluable evidence of the theoretical and practical conditions surrounding the apophatic and mystic use of silence. This illuminates the reasons why certain theorists claim that the only pertinence of silence is its opposition to the discursive voice, to the logos, while, for others, silence is intrinsic to melos, to music, to the point that mystic practices make use of ineffable musical notes.
