Abstract: Rhetoric of the Hellenistic and imperial eras turned to silence to conceive of its strategies, from the most obscure, frightening or moving silences – like the sublime silence of Ajax – to the most sociable and civilised silences. The aim is to render rhetorical silence – a powerful oxymoron – reasonable.
