Abstract: For Longin, Ajax’s silence faced with Ulysses in Hell is one of the most effective examples of sublime magnitudo animi. Analysed from the perspective of brachylogy, silence serves a phenomenology of the sublime in which not only grace, softness, respect, and benevolence is expressed but also fear, violence and obscurity.
