Abstract: There are three categories of silence in Pindare’s poetry : the silence of the ineffable, when nobody can say anything (aphaton) ; “religious” silence, that of respect and shame, aidôs concerning anything which could be repugnant ; and purely rhetorical silence following the conventions which concern praise, both the author and object of it, in line with traditional triangular communication.
