• Abstract: Although the theme of the epos is a leitmotif of Lukács’s literary criticism, the question of its underpinning is another story. Gradually, the category of “generic being,” drawn from Marx’s Economic and Philosophic Manuscripts of 1844, supplanted Kultur. This analysis of this epistemological shift focuses on emphasizing the relevance of a cross reading of The Theory of the Novel and its author’s later works.
