- Abstract: Lewis’ famous Gothic novel, The Monk, contains an episode, the tale of “The Bloody Nun,” which met with lasting success, particularly in the 19th century. The article presents the tale (itself borrowed by Lewis), some of its transpositions to the stage, and its adaptations into the opera. This account seems to be a kind of missing link between the Gothic Novel and the detective novel, the opera acting as a relay in the transmission of mystery.
