• Abstract: From the 1830s onwards, the everyday became the object of a mediatised redefinition which would determine the evolution of the realist aesthetic. Through the intermediary of the notions of romance and novel, we demonstrate the narrative and thematic tensions at the heart of the nineteenth-century novel in order to identify the articulations between the everydayness and the romanticising of narrative. These ultimately led to a redefinition of nineteenth-century novelistic territory.
