  • Abstract: The collections of animal novels written by Louis Pergaud at the beginning of the twentieth century amount to an essay in animal psychology which is profoundly opposed to the Cartesian postulates of a separation between human and animal, and any specificity of animal suffering. Instead of reproducing an ideology in which suffering animals do not feel, Pergaud renders intense effects of internal focalisation in order to convey the terrors of Margot the magpie, captured and tortured to death by humans.
