  • Abstract: In his collection of short stories, Moralités légendaires, Jules Laforgue borrows heavily from his two intellectual guides, Hartmann and Schopenhauer. But he does not limit himself to using quotation and reformulation to construct his discourse based on their example. These intertexts shape the narrative itself and the characters’ destinies in accordance with the conception of existence professed by the two philosophers. The speculative material thus changes status and becomes the material of the narrative through a phenomenon of narrativization.
